In his famous Harvard commencement address, Solzhenitsyn said that the problem in both the east and the west was that common life had become divorced from the transcendent. In the east this bred lawlessness and in the west it bred an amoral legalism that confused following the letter of the law with being virtuous. He called for bringing transcendence back into our politics, both to discipline our moral lives and to help us go beyond mere rule-following. In the world of 2022, Solzhenitsyn is finally getting his wish. But is that a good thing? What happens when the strong gods return and reassert themselves on the global stage? And can Christianity offer us hope in a time of such uncertainty? We’ll answer that question with help from the Australian missiologist Mark Sayers and Princeton political theorist Eric Gregory.
